Barbara and Simon established Portman Plants in 2009, becoming full-time horticulturalists after professional careers as, respectively, a design/business researcher-writer and a science teacher/botanist, each with over 30 years experience of growing plants ‘on the side.’
We strive to offer our customers something distinctive from their mainstream suppliers as well as meeting the demand for well-loved favourites. In so doing, we raise a tremendously varied, constantly changing range of plants in our small market garden nursery in Kings Heath, all grown by ourselves. We focus on herbaceous perennials (including highly unusual varieties) with that ‘cottage garden’ appeal alongside annuals, shrubs and climbers, vegetable plants, herbs, house plants, cacti and succulents.
What we sell changes with the seasons: for instance we provide bulbs mainly in winter and spring, annuals for summer bedding, vegetable plants from spring to early autumn, cacti in summer and autumn. We supply perennials all year round – obviously varying according to the time of year.
In the colder months when we have fewer plants available we sell our home-made preserves,** dried flower posies, pot pourri and dried herbs alongside them. We offer a great variety of preserves – marmalades, curds, jellies, jams and chutneys – and again you can enjoy standard recipes as well as the more exotic. We use local ingredients where feasible.
Apologies that you can’t visit our nursery to buy as we are not generally open to the public except for pre-arranged collections, though for queries or advance orders you are welcome to contact us by phone or email, or come and have a chat with us at the farmers markets.
